THE STORY OF FORESTRUN

FIRST THERE WAS RUNNING...

In a nod to Greek history, the first marathon commemorated the run of the messenger Pheidippides from the battlefield of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C. According to this legend, Pheidippides ran the approximately 42K to announce the defeat of the Persians to some anxious Athenians.

THEN THERE WAS ORIENTEERING...

The history of orienteering begins late 18 hundreds in Sweden, where it originated as military training. The actual term "orienteering" was first used in 1886 at the Swedish Military Academy Karlberg and meant the crossing of unknown land with the support of a map and a compass. The competitive sport began when some Swedish military officers held a race on the 28th of May 1893 at the yearly games of the Stockholm garrison.

Nowadays orienteering is a sport with a lot of terrain running and fast navigation. Races are organised in 3 disciplines - Sprint/Middle and Long with distances of 3 to 15K and about 20 controls. find out more at orienteering.vlaanderen.

AND.... TRAILRUNNING...

Trail running was born in 1904 when some San Francisco hikers made a bet to see who could run the fastest over the Mount Talampais trails starting from the Dipsea Inn  at Stinson Beach. From then they called themselves the Dipsea Indians and organised the first Dipsea Race the year after. This was the first Annual Championship Cross Country Run from Mill Valley to Dipsea by the Sea.

The Dipsea Race stands as the creator of a form of distance running that catches the imagination. It shaped the sport for the generations to come.

For both orienteering and trailrunning - runners often cite smaller impact on joints and muscles, as well as the landscape and non-urban environment, as primary reasons for preferring these sports over road running.

NOW THERE IS ... "THE FORESTRUN"

The forestrun combines the best parts of both trailrunning and orienteering. The combination is the most fun outdoor challenge one can think of.  It was invented by a creative member of our Hamok Orienteering Club - Dries van der Kleij.

The first Forestrun takes place 15th of August 2021 This is the start of a new era in outdoor adventurous running activities.

By participating in this race you can write a part of history.

The concept is simple yet very attractive for both orienteers and trailrunners and of course roadrunners looking for new adventure in nature.
